The team at St Judes were very busy promoting National BackCare Awareness Week.

WIBN – lunch, Leighton Buzzard

Moira D’Arcy, Practice Principal, gave an informative talk to the Leighton Buzzard group of the Women in Business Network. She explained why it is so important to look after your back and gave out some useful tips on back care. Some of the comments received included:

“My thanks to Moira for a great talk on back care, it certainly has me thinking about how I am sitting here in my office.” S Hodgkins

“Thanks for a very informative talk yesterday – the tips were very much appreciated. It had never occurred to us to rest before unpacking the car on our return from holiday.” M Greenhill

Moira and Sam were out on a blustery but sunny Sunday on Dunstable Downs offering advice on back care and sports injury prevention to the 900 runners that took part.

Runners often develop knee and foot pain which can sometimes arise from alignment problems. St Judes Clinic team of physiotherapists and podiatrist can monitor your running/walking pattern and recommend changes and treatments to help ease pain and prevent future sports injuries.

National BackCare Awareness Week 11-15 October 2010

How healthy is your back? It’s National BackCare Awareness Week and what better time to think about the importance of keeping your back in tip-top shape the whole year through with just a few changes to your daily routine.

Busy lives mean it’s all too easy to forget that we need to make time to ensure our muscles and joints stay healthy and supple.

BackCare, the Charity for healthier backs, recommends making small changes to your daily routine. Exercising and staying active plays a significant part in the prevention and management of back pain.

Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Massage, Podiatry and Pilates, all have their place in helping to treat or prevent back pain and the therapists at St Judes have been keeping backs healthy for the last 18 years.

St Judes Clinic also run Pilates classes at Leighton Buzzard Library on Thursday evenings. These classes are held by a specialist APPI Pilates teacher who is also a physiotherapist. For further details on Pilates at St Judes go to:

If you are experiencing problems with your back or neck, let St Judes put you back on track. To help you to a speedier recovery we are offering a 15% discount off our usual prices for an initial physiotherapy or podiatry consultation booked during BackCare Week.

For more information on the BackCare charity go to:

Back Care Week
Exercises such as Pilates can help to treat back pain with stretching and strengthening to condition the body’s centre or ‘core’ and are particularly recommended for those who do suffer from backache and pains.

The physiotherapists at St Judes regularly treat office workers who suffer from pain due to many hours spent at a desk or computer. Making small changes such as standing up while talking on the phone or taking regular short walks around the office relieves muscular tension and can make a noticeable difference.

Leighton-Linslade Carnival July 10th 2010

St Mary’s Village Fete - 3 July 2010

Once again St Judes Physiotherapy Clinic attended this great community event raising money for the fete charities and other local good causes. The main nominated charity this year was Keech Hospice Care, the local charity for adults and children diagnosed with life-limiting condition.

This year’s theme was inventions so St Judes displayed some posters of medical inventions such as penicillin and X-ray. They decided to do something a little different this year and put Moira, Practice Principal, in some medieval stocks and gave the public the opportunity to splat the physiotherapist with a wet sponge!

As usual St Judes helped to raise money with a charity raffle and some of the moneys raised this year went to Totternhoe Scouts in support of their World Scout Jamboree next year. The raffle prize was either a family annual pass to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo or an ultimate pamper package at St Judes. The lucky winner was Mrs Barbara Napier who generously chose to give the family annual zoo pass to her daughter.

St Mary’s Village Fete is always a great community event which the staff enjoy being part of. For more pictures of the fete visit: http://www.stmarysvillagecarnival.com or for more information on Keech visit: http://www.keech.org.uk.

Healthy Schools Initiative – June 2010, Edlesborough School

Once again Alex and Moira, 2 of our Chartered Physiotherapists, were asked to talk about the benefits of exercise and looking after your back as part of Edlesborough School’s series of talks on health.

Moira and Alex were impressed by how knowledgeable the children were and by their eagerness to participate in question time. A greater understanding of the benefits of exercise, physiology and the need to maintain good posture are all valuable lessons for anyone to know. We hope that the children of Edlesborough School enjoyed our talks as much as we enjoyed doing them. We left the children with our St Judes top tips for back care.

If you would like St Judes to give your group/organisation a talk please speak to Moira on: 01525 377751 or email: enquiries@stjudesclinic.com.

April News – St Judes Talk at Dagnall School - 27th April 2010

Moira D’Arcy recently visited Dagnall School, which is a recognised healthy School, to talk about back care as part of the school’s Personal, Social and Health Education.

Moira was pleased to help out and talk about the importance of looking after our bodies at an early age. She gave the children some quite challenging questions which were answered with enthusiasm and thought. Both Moira and the children enjoyed themselves and the headteacher, Mrs Mariner-Kyle, said that the talk was well received by the children.

March News – Brain Tumour Awareness Month

In March St Judes were asked if we would like to participate in Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Nicole Witts, a fundraiser and survivor of a life-threatening tumour, organised a ladies pamper night at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club on 3rd March to help raise funds for this worthwhile cause. Did you know:

33% more children died from a brain tumour in 2007 than 2001.

16,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year.

More children and people under the age of 40 die of a brain tumour than leukaemia or any other cancer and five year survival is still only 14%.

The evening was a great success with various local businesses taking part. Moira D’Arcy and Diana O’Reilly from St Judes offered body alignment checks and advice to the ladies. Attendees were given a voucher for discounted physiotherapy assessments and were entered into a prize draw to win a free massage or reflexology session at the clinic.

Brain Tumour Action also asked if we would hold a Wear a Hat day for brain tumours and make a donation towards brain tumour research.

Professional News

As a clinic committed to continual Professional development, St Judes has been running Acupuncture Peer Review Group Meetings for some years now.

Examples of topics on our agendas would be case history reviews, book reviews, course feedback, protocols, discussions and more.

If you are a physio who practices Acupuncture and would like to join us, please contact the Clinic on 01525 377751 and ask to speak to Moira D'Arcy (Practice Principal).

If you would be interested in arranging a talk for a local group or organisation please give us a ring. Talks available include:
  • Women's Health
  • Back Care
  • Foot Health and Biomechanics
"We recently had Moria Darcy of the St. Judes Clinic in Leighton Buzzard talk to our Club, as part of National Back week, about looking after your back and the problems that arise from back misuse.

Moria's talk was excellent and very well received. Moria declined any expenses for her talk but asked if we could make a donation to BackCare which we are happy to do so and enclose our cheque for £30.00"

Moira recently did a talk for the ladies of the Leighton Buzzard Women's Institute. Their £35 donation was forwarded to the BackCare charity to which they replied: "Please accept our warmest thanks for your support and kind wishes. We are extremely grateful for your generosity, which makes it possible for us to continue to provide valuable support for those suffering from the effects of back pain."

Back Care Week - This year runs from 4th -10th October.
This is organised by BackCare - The Charity for Healthier Backs. This year's theme is: Believe you can do it. The team at St Judes will be busy giving lots of talks to local organisations regarding backcare, posture and Pilates. If you are part of an organisation whom you feel would benefit from a talk from the St Judes Team, talks we can offer include: Backs & Backcare, Posture & Pilates, Pelvic Floor, Foot Conditions and Foot Health. The spaces for free talks in and around Back Care Week are now full but please ring us to discuss your needs and book ahead for next year. Although we do not charge for these we do ask for a small donation to BackCare.

At other times our team members are available to do talks at a fee which is variable depending on what is required by the client - please call or e-mail us for further details.

St Judes - Supporting the Community

On behalf of the Friends of Dagnall School I would like to thank you very much for your donation for our Christmas Fayre.

The Fayre was held last Satday and we made around £800 profit which will be put to very good use for the benefit of the children at the school.

Sandra

Leighton Buzzard Golf Club

November and December were busy months for the St Judes Team. As part of our partner links work Moira & Nicki gave physiotherapy advice and talked to members of the Leighton Buzzard Golf Club. Tracey Field, our Reflexologist, was also there giving taster sessions of reflexology to the members.

On Ladie' Day Moira offered mini gait analysis for members to check on any knee and foot alignment problems. This service was very well received and she was kept very busy! Our biomechanics team of physiotherapists and podiatrist can identify and treat any knee and feet problems which may be causing other issues such as back and hip pain. A ten minute chat is available free of charge.

The Youngevity Club

Moira presented a lively interactive talk to members of the club. Michael Flynn, speaking for the Club, said: “thank you for a splendid talk which we all thoroughly enjoyed. I am sure that you have made some new friends.” The group made Moira feel very welcome and they have now booked one of our physiotherapists, Amanda, to talk in February on the subject of Acupuncture.

If you are interested in having one of our team talk at your local group please give Moira a call.

Keeping up to date

All our staff attend regular courses and keep up to date with the latest clinical developments. Moira was fortunate enough to observe Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Simon Lambert BSc, FRCS, FRCS Ed Orth, carrying out shoulder surgery at The Spire Hospital, Bushey. The morning was very useful revision and a fascinating insight into this surgery. Moira would like to say a special thank you to Mr Lambert and his very welcoming team.

Meanwhile Paul Gough, our Podiatrist, attended The Podiatry Conference in November and Amanda Spencer continues her MSc in Acupuncture and is now in her second year.
