Start Living – Stop Stressing

With the run up to Christmas upon us it is easy to feel anxious and stressed. Research shows that one in four people in the UK will suffer some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year with much of these problems being stress related.*

Thankfully there are numerous solutions available to help people manage stress levels. Changing your lifestyle combining a balanced diet and physical activity can help you cope with stress. Identifying situations that make you feel stressed and learning way to avoid them will make you feel more in control.

If you think you are stressed or very anxious, talk to your GP who will be able to help you decide on the best way to deal with it.

If you often feel stressed or anxious, it's important to learn how to relax.

At St Judes our expert therapists offer a variety of treatment options to clear your mind and relax your body.

Beat the seasonal stress

Choose from:

Relaxing body massage
Pilates
Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine and involves the insertion of very fine needles at key points in the body. When energy of “Qi” is disturbed or unbalanced, problems can occur and by inserting needles you can help release any blockages in the energy flow. Recent research has shown that acupuncture helps the body to release its natural painkillers and “feel good” hormones, known as endorphins.

Relaxing massage
stretches out and relaxes muscles, improves blood supply and give you a general feeling of well being. Massage reduces anxiety and promotes relaxation.

Pilates is a mind body conditioning exercise programme that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall core stability and posture. Exercises encourage you to think about how you perform everyday movements, improves posture and helps provide relaxation and decreases stress.

  Back Care

On Thursday 8 September, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP) organised Workout at Work Day (WOWD) to mark World Physical Therapy Day.

Physiotherapists all over the country promoted exercise and wellbeing in the workplace by encouraging staff to get active during their working day.

On hearing about this our Practice Principal and Chartered Physiotherapist, Moira D’Arcy, was keen to get involved.  With the help of I Love Leighton Buzzard, the local town business promotion organisation, we decided to create a giant Mexican Wave of shop and business people in Leighton Buzzard High Street.  This seemed to be a fun way of making people stop from their working routines and get up and move and getting everyone outside shops and offices in the High Street to make a wave caused quite a stir on an otherwise grey day!

Moira says that movement breaks from work, so that staff are not troubled by the aches and pains that come on as the result of being in one position for too long, are very important.   A recent poll by the CSP revealed that 42% of people found simple exercise left them out of puff.  Physiotherapists recommend that adults exercise at moderate intensity for 30 minutes, 5 times a week, and that children are physically active for an hour every day.

St Judes Clinic have been helping to treat and prevent injuries from occurring for the last 18 years and we are very keen to promote injury prevention and show people ways of building exercise into their every day lives.  To help mark the occasion we offered some special discounts:

•15% off physiotherapy assessments until the 18th September and

•3 workstation assessments at one business premises for the usual price of 2 carried out by our highly qualified Ergonomic Specialist.

Summer Fetes 2011

The St Judes team of Physiotherapists, Podiatrists and other staff have been busy over the last few weeks raising money for local good causes and giving free advice at various summer fetes.

Our first event was the Leighton Buzzard Pre-School Learning Alliance Picnic in the Park. Our Paediatric Physiotherapist kept the little ones busy with a colouring competition - 3 year old Joshua Wood was very excited to receive a selection of pres-school toys!

On July 2nd was the St Mary’s Village fete in Edlesborough and this year the theme was Pirates – and as you can see Practice Principal; Moira D’Arcy, dressed up for the occasion! Kids searched for buried treasure in our lucky dip whilst grown-ups tried to find our hidden prize on the treasure map – the winner won a 45 minutes expert massage by one of our physiotherapists.

Lastly the St Judes team had fun at the Leighton Linslade Carnival. Here the theme was circus so kids had fun hooping a cuddly tiger and 9 year old Joseph Kaye won a cuddly toy. Mums and Dads entered our circus quiz and one lucky winner was able to choose from a 45 minute sports massage or relaxing body massage.

April is acupuncture month at St Judes.
Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine and involves the insertion of very fine needles at key points in the body. Recent research has shown that acupuncture helps the body to release its natural painkillers, known as endorphins. The main use of acupuncture within physiotherapy is to ease symptoms of pain and discomfort. The most common problems that physiotherapists may use acupuncture for are:

  • Recent, sports and whiplash injuries.
  • To help with long-term chronic pain such as arthritic pain and back and neck pain.
  • Treatment of recurrent headaches and migraines.
  • To alleviate muscular spasm to help restore correct movement.
  • To alleviate other symptoms associated with pain and injury such as poor sleep or stress.
Acupuncture is often combined with traditional physiotherapy treatment techniques for best effect. The physiotherapists here who carry out acupuncture are all members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP).

Speak with one of our friendly physiotherapists to see how this treatment could help you. FREE Ten minute advice chats are always available. Tel: 01525 377751 or e-mail: enquiries@stjudesclinic.com.
